To formally verify differences in the mothers’ use of MSL categories as a function of children’s age, we performed a MANOVA (multivariate analysis of variance) that has showed a significant difference in the use of communicative terms [ F (2,27) = 4.498; p = 0.021; η 2 = 0.44] with a decreasing trend: mothers of younger children utilized more communicative terms ( M = 25.93, SD = 11.70) than mother of the 5.05-year-old children ( M = 20.03, SD = 10.19) and the 5.11-year-old children ( M = 12.17, SD = 8.15).
Although results regarding the duration of the last fixation on the ball showed only marginally significant differences, we argue that the duration of the last fixation did not decrease with the higher salience of the distractor (the goalkeeper) because of a further need for visual processing, but because shorter durations reflected some kind of allocation of attention toward the distal target and the goalkeeper.
Finally, there was a numerical trend such that subjects were more successful in reaching agreements with the unfair agent than with the fair agent ( M fair = 60%, SE = 4%; M unfair = 75% points, SE = 3%), but this effect did not reach significance ( Z = 1.07, n.s.).
