Considering the fact that this experiment was conducted under normal diet conditions, not high calorie diet conditions, and the degree of difference in the blood profiles of the experimental groups was quite significant.

Jackal survival also appeared to show an increasing trend over the years (‘Time’ factor in Table 4 ), and this factor was included here for controlling this source of variation.

For validation purposes, the hypoxic signature derived by RNA-sequencing was compared to gene expression profiles obtained by microarray analysis in independent experiments, revealing a highly significant correlation between the two different approaches ( Fig. 2 ).

The results confirm an expected trend of increasing recall (i.e., fewer false negatives) and decreasing in precision (i.e., more false positives) with greater population density 30 .
