The reduction in pain intensity was marginally significant after adjusting for baseline values (P = 0.08) and there was no significant difference between the two groups after adjusting for all covariates (P = 0.11).

For the trained leg, there was an increase of around 15% from M1 to M2 for the FE group (β = 1.32 (0.72)), but the change over time in comparison to the control group was only trending towards significance (t(50) = 1.81, p = 0.08) and only became significant at M3 (β = 1.80 (0.72)) (t(50) = 2.49, p = 0.02).

The interaction ITI x Tone x Area x Group, which approached significance ( F (1, 29) = 2.66, p = 0.08), indicated that this pattern could be different across the groups.

The Pattern Recognition game had the greatest effect and the Categories game the least effect, with the difference between the two approaching significance (p = 0.08) ( Table 1 ).

When including data from participants administered task order 2 also, there was a similar pattern of results although the relationship between temperature and age narrowly missed statistical significance (p = 0.08) (Supplementary Information S4 ).

Similarly, in the numerosity 20, there was a significant difference between 4 × 4 and 1 × 1 divider trials ( t (19) = 3.46, p = 0.008), and a difference that approached significance between 4 × 4 and 2 × 2 divider trials ( t (19) = 1.85, p = 0.080).
