This has been a topic of discussion in the social sciences, with some scholars suggesting that “approaching significance” can be used to interpret the marginal significance (e.g., Blake & Gangestad, 2020 ; Salvador et al., 2020 ), while others argue that the established statistical significance standard should be applied and that findings of marginal significance are not statistically significant (e.g., Olsson-Collentine et al., 2019 ).
Finite constructions There was a main effect of correctness approaching significance at the first ROI, and significant at the second and third ROIs [first ROI: F 1(1,37) = 3.489; p = 0.07; F 2(1,9) = 4.257; p = 0.046; Second ROI: F 1(1,37) = 32.093; p < 0.001; F 2(1,9) = 27.5; p < 0.001; Third ROI: F 1(1,37) = 13.208; p < 0.001; F 2(1,9) = 7.121; p = 0.001].
Although only approaching significance, and similar to comparing NCI and DEM females, having more sons was related to reduced performance than having more daughters in MCI, but not in NCI females on the WMS Delay Recall task (model: F (7,284) = 21.890, p < 0.001, R 2 = 0.350, adjusted R 2 = 0.334; β = −0.169 , p = 0.084, sr 2 = 0.007; Fig. 3d ).
Between-group analysis of molecular outputs used a general linear mixed model (GLMM), including dam as a random factor and the following predictors: fixed factors (sex, group) and co-variates (maternal IL-6 and TNFα), with p-values ≤ 0.05 considered statistically significant and 0.05 < p ≤ 0.075 highlighted as approaching significance.
Consistent with this, FVB/n mice possessed a lower proportion (approaching significance) of CD71 (+) i.c.TCRβ (+) proliferating DN3 cells 18 (Fig. 2C ), that expressed significantly lower levels of CD5 (Fig. 2D ), a recognised marker of TCR signal strength 19 , than similar cells from C57BL/6 mice, suggesting that inefficient β-selection may be due to weak preTCR signalling in FVB/n animals.
In the same direction, other research has shown that a low digit ratio is associated with anger, hostility, physical aggression (and verbal aggression approaching significance), total sensation seeking, thrill and adventure seeking [ 76 ], less precautionary behavior [ 36 , 37 ], and with risk taking in women [ 77 ].
