Based on simple correlations of force versus time for each beetle, it was found that 8 of the 21 beetles tested showed a pattern of reduction in force over time (see the slight downward trend in Figure 2A ), 3 showed no positive or negative trend ( Figure 2B ), and 10 showed a trend of increasing force over time ( Figure 2C ).
A separate observational cohort study examined the role of bevacizumab after disease progression in patients who did or did not received first-line bevacizumab and showed a trend towards longer OS in patients who had first- and second-line bevacizumab exposure (median OS, 21.7 months) than in patients who only received bevacizumab after progression (median OS, 17.5 months) [8] .
Each of the four measures we assessed in this manipulation study—likelihood of SRE expression, proportional reproductive investment in SRE, total fruits produced, and timing of reproduction—showed a trend opposite to what would be expected given that the deferral hypothesis were true, and instead were consistent with the transitional hypothesis.
However, when patient samples were divided into the 10 most sensitive (0 - 53% viability of control) and 10 least sensitive (95 - above 100% viability of control) to nutlin-3, the least sensitive patient samples showed a trend towards higher expression levels of most heat shock proteins, although the differences in median values were not significant (median values for sensitive versus non-sensitive samples for Hsp27(pSer82): 7.9/7.8 u/ml; Hsp27(pSer15): 5.8/6.1 u/ml; Hsp90 alpha: 10.8/12.0 ng/ml; Hsp40: 14.6/21.9 ng/ml; Hsp70: 42.9/58.7 ng/ml; Hsp60: 262.1/245.1 ng/ml) (Figure 4 B) (for AML patient characteristics, see Additional file 3 ).
