Regarding specific root length, it exhibited an increasing trend with lower sulfur concentrations and a decreasing trend with higher sulfur concentrations ( Figure 2 c,d), indicating that lower sulfur concentrations promoted the growth of fine roots, while higher sulfur concentrations inhibited their growth.

The results showed that T2 over-expressing materials showed an increasing trend ( Figure 6 A); however, gene-edited materials showed a downward trend ( Figure 6 B).

As a reflection of these principles, China’s geographic landscape of belowground biomass proportion (BGBP) demonstrates a decreasing trend from northwest to southeast, with central and northwestern regions—characterized by their arid climate and cooler temperatures—exhibiting higher BGBP, in contrast to the lower values observed in the warm, moisture-rich southern areas ( Figure 1 A).

After ST treatment, the single leaf area was no longer correlated with LAI and TPC contents and had a significant negative correlation with TChl contents (r = −0.66); the highly significant positive correlation with ground diameter (r = 0.90) changed to a significant negative correlation (r = −0.66); and LAI was no longer correlated with ground diameter or height.
