Maternal education (OR: 1.56 (95% CI: 0.98–2.46); p = 0.057), was marginally significant and was included in the multivariate analysis; additionally low birth weight showed marginal significance (OR: 2.90 (95% CI: 1.12–7.44); p = 0.07), however the large number of missing values for birth weight (19.2% missing) and paternal age (10.9% missing) reduced the potential value as predictive factors and were therefore not included in the multivariate analysis.
A marginal significance (0.05 ≤ p ≤ 0.07) is indicated by a symbol in parentheses. 3.

3.2 Laboratory experimental study: Mate choice In general, males had to increase the use of refuges at high temperatures (Tukey 34°C vs 38°C, P = 0.01; Table 4 , Fig 4 ), although with a high inter-individual variability (Male refuge use variance: 34°C = 11269, 36°C = 78654, 38°C = 107728), whereas females showed the same tendency but with only marginal significance (Tukey 34°C vs 38°C P = 0.07).
This choice of markers would also be consistent with a cursory analysis of illness severity showing that IL-1α and IL-8 in particular display a correlation of at least marginal significance ( p ≤ 0.07) or better with the general fatigue, physical fatigue and reduced activity components of the MFI (Additional file 1 : Table S4).

For leukemia, high ( M = −1.76, SD = 1.76) and low ( M = −1.45, SD = 2.17) risk stimuli differed only at a marginal significance level, t (36) = 1.87, p = .07, partial η 2 = 0.09, indicating however an opposite polarity as observed for HIV risk (see Figure 3B ).
