A borderline significant difference was observed in initial SOFA scores [8.0 (5.0–10.0) vs. 7.0 (5.0–9.0), p = 0.050], with higher scores among patients who required RRT.
Subgroup analysis on the effect of nitrate supplementation revealed a small, borderline significant effect in favour of chronic nitrate intervention (Hedges'g = 0.30, 95% CI -0.00 to 0.59, Z = 1.94, p = 0.05), but a trivial non-significant effect in favour of acute nitrate intervention (Hedges'g = 0.10, 95% CI -0.08 to 0.28, Z = 1.11, p = 0.27).

The results also displayed a borderline significant difference across the genetic risk scores for body fat mass (p = 0.05), percentage of body fat (p = 0.05), serum HDL concentration (p = 0.08), and CRP (p = 0.06).
In the parsimonious model, HPV18 positivity remained borderline significant (adjusted OR = 4.17, 95% CI: 1.00–16.97; p = 0.050.
