Male neonates with late-stage neonatal sepsis in China had the highest decreasing trend values between the two age groups stratified by country; however, a slightly increasing trend in DALYs due to short gestation (APC: −1.7; 95% CI: −2.0, −1.4) and low birthweight (APC: −2.3; 95% CI: −2.7, −2.0) was observed in both groups between 2013 to 2019.
In men, there was a decreasing trend of − 14.5% (95% CI: − 54.6 to 60.8) between 2004 and 2006, then a slightly increasing trend in the mid Joinpoint (2006–2013; APC, 4.4; 95% CI: − 6.4 to 16.5), and a significant increase of 139.9% (95% CI: 62.4 to 254.2; P ≤ 0.05) between 2013 and 2015.
In addition, we observed a slightly increasing trend in the incidence of AFR, AFVR, ABD, and FD over the years since 2009; this may coincide with the duration of the implementation of the SSS and is likely associated with the increased distribution of data reporting and feedback at all levels during the last nine consecutive years.
Moreover, the implementation of join-point regression analysis, also known as change-point regression or segmented regression analysis [ 33 ] to detect changing trends in cancer incidence (see for example [ 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 , 39 ]) further confirms that the incidence rate in Romania presents two join points in 2014 and 2017, leading to three periods with a different trend over the analysis period, as follows: a positive trend with a slope coefficient of 14.68 until 2014, a negative trend with a slope coefficient of −8.83 during 2014–2017, and a slightly increasing trend with a slope of 2.05 after 2017 ( Figure 4 , Panel b).
