Fourth, while only 14 of the 49 effect sizes for social abilities in autistic children showed fully significant confidence intervals compared with the active control group [ 30 , 46 , 48 , 50 , 51 , 55 , 57 , 60 , 62 ], several confidence intervals approached significance [ 30 , 46 , 48 , 50 , 51 , 55 , 57 , 60 , 62 ].

In gender subgroup analyses, a statistically significant interaction was found for TC ( P for interaction = 0.021), suggesting a stronger association in male patients (OR = 2.429, 95% CI: 1.697–3.475), while the interaction for LDL-C approached significance ( P for interaction = 0.051).

Women exhibited a steeper and more statistically significant increase with respect to age in the cerebellum, and a smaller rate of increase with respect to age as compared to men in the occipital lobes that approached significance ( Figure 3 , Table 2 ).

The remaining metabolite, glycoursodeoxycholate, approached significance with a p value of 0.06.

In our experiments, the time spent in the stranger chamber only approached significance, indicating that sniffing time is probably a more reliable measurement of sociability in Fmr1 KO mice in our setup.

When contextual sensitivity was compared between groups, the overall effect of group was no longer significant (see Figure 4 ): F (2, 50) = 0.513, p = 0.60, partial eta squared = 0.02), and none of the pairwise between-group comparisons approached significance (all p s > 0.12).

In contrast, post hoc comparisons might have approached significance if the sample size was increased, as variance and means suggest.

It is nevertheless interesting that for bipolar disorder, the association with block design approached significance at the most stringent threshold; this is the genome‐wide significant threshold and included only four SNPs that have been associated with bipolar disorder.

The genotypes rs6733839 in the BIN 1 gene and rs28834970 in the PTK 2B gene approached significance in the PENN cohort and were significantly associated with reduced AD risk in the NACC cohort.

The p-value (p = .06) indicated that the algorithm scores for comparing the surface versus core-located mutations approached significance at the .05 α-value, suggesting that the observed trend towards a higher algorithm score (mean score = 13.2) in the surface mutations versus mutations occurring deeper in the VHL structure (mean score = 10.4) may have biological importance ( Fig 2D ).

Age approached significance, reflecting that younger individuals were more likely than older individuals to experience SAD.

Notably, our studied population was very small, and it is possible that we did not reach significance for the behaviors that approached significance due to under-powering.

While the TD children showed a significant linear relationship between auditory threshold and age, neither poor reader group showed such a relationship (although the trajectory for the children with dyslexia approached significance, see Figure 9A ).

For patients >18 years, WQLCQ scores showed a significant increase (improvement) at 1 month and approached significance at all other timepoints ( Table 2 , supplementary material).

Another limitation is the relatively small sample size, which may have contributed to the lack of statistical significance in some associations, although several approached significance.

Yeast cells treated with MCHM concentrations of 550 ppm showed significantly longer comet tails as compared to no treatment and no spheroplast controls (Tukey’s test p adj = 0.0437 and 0.000229 respectively) and approached significance as compared to 5mM H 2 O 2 positive controls (p adj = 0.0655).

Zero was included in the confidence interval (CI) for the indirect effect in the bootstrapped mediation analysis for each outcome, although the mediation analysis approached significance for community involvement and leadership (see table S7).
