4.3 Genetic parameters are not correlated with contemporary population density Neither observed heterozygosity nor the inbreeding coefficient was significantly correlated with contemporary population densities (Figure 5 ), although there was a weak trend suggesting that populations with higher observed heterozygosity in the 1990s have higher densities at present.
Statistics applied to detect departures from neutrality reveal a weak trend toward positive values in A. gambiae and A. coluzzii (and hybrids) from “Far-West”, whereas negative values were scored in both species from West and Central Africa (significant in A. gambiae : D* = −2.583, F* = −2.686, and A. coluzzi : D* = −2.848, F* = −2.922) as well as in A. gambiae from Rwanda, suggesting the influence of different selective pressures and/or demographic histories in populations from different geographic areas.
In control crosses, in which two wild-type males were sequentially mated to hermaphrodites, progeny numbers from the first and second male were variable, but no consistent bias was observed, other than a weak trend in which non- mIs11 males seemed to be slightly favored over mIs11 -containing males ( Figure 2A , Figure 2—figure supplement 1 ).
