In our findings, a history of diabetes mellitus (OR 1.83, 95% CI 0.88–3.78, P = 0.1), hypertension (OR 1.37, 95% CI 0.82–2.31, P = 0.23) or asthma (OR 1.1, 95% CI 0.68–1.77, P = 0.7) was not significantly associated with infection; however, a trend towards significance was demonstrated with OR greater than one in each case.

On adjusting for perceived risk, sex, race/ethnicity, and age, only non-Hispanic Black remained statistically significant (adjusted OR=0.07, 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.01–0.59), while moderate-risk perception (adjusted OR=3.17, p=0.055) and Hispanic (adjusted OR=0.12, p=0.051) showed a trend towards significance.
