We may not have observed a mechanistic linkage joining vegetation structure and production because relationships within every segment of the hypothesized cascade (e.g., disturbance severity versus vegetation structure; Figure 2 ) were often not significant or only weakly significant and, accordingly, unlikely to carry forward to NPP (Figure 6 ).
