While the control group displayed relatively stable levels of wellbeing between the pretest and posttest measurements—with an effect size of d = 0.00 indicating a complete absence of change—participants in the intervention group experienced a meaningful increase in positive psychological functioning following regular participation in physical activity, with a within-group effect size of d = 0.93 indicating a large and practically significant improvement.
Based on guidelines for interpreting Bayes factors ( 55 ), BF ROPE values > 3 provide substantial evidence in favor of the alternative hypothesis (i.e., the parameter value is large enough to be practically significant), whereas BF ROPE values < 1/3 provide substantial evidence in favor of the interval null hypothesis (i.e., the parameter of interest is so small that it is practically equivalent to zero).
In part, we were motivated to explore this effect by our recent findings that the BDDME exhibits a more robust and consistent response to 5-HT than DA, which is practically significant due to serotonin’s roles in neuropsychiatric disease states ( Figure 4 D and Figure S3 ) [ 54 , 55 , 56 , 57 ].
As it was cautioned that statistical significance was sensitive to sample size and the effects should not be evaluated simply based on statistical significance, the significant group differences were further investigated by examining the size of the effect estimates to determine if the effects were practically significant or could be ignored because the size of the effect would have no appreciable bearing on the interpretation of group differences [ 89 ].
Although this observation is interesting in itself, given that the pathway that PSC influences work engagement through job demands is not assumed in the extended JD‐R model 1 and that the specific mediation effect of psychological demands is quite small compared to that of job resources (see Table 3 and Appendix 3 ), the mediation effect of psychological demands in the association of perceived PSC with work engagement may not be practically significant.
