These findings are consistent with an expected trend, relating to low rates of periodontal disease and root exposure (resulting in root caries) among young adults, and a higher rate of molar tooth loss (resulting in fewer pit and fissure sites) and periodontal disease (which increase the rates of root exposure) among older adults (Darby & Walsh, 2010 , pp. 243–245; Mobley, 2007 ).
The mean ingestion rates follow an expected trend with low ingestion rates associated with infants (who are largely shielded from soil and dust), the highest ingestion rates associated with toddlers, and a gradual tapering off in older aged children, for whom hand-to-mouth behavior is expected to decrease.
