Changes in the pygidial segment count along with an increase in the relative size of the pygidium [ 8 , 9 ] underlie the proposed trend towards increased ‘caudalization’ of the pygidium, an idea that also encompasses an apparent trend towards increased differentiation in the morphological expression of segments in the pygidium relative to the thoracic tergites [ 8 , 10 , 11 ].
